In news that will no go down well with Jermain Defoe's breakfast, various national newspapers and sources close to the club are this morning stating that Charlton's Darren Bent is set to sign for Tottenham on Monday. The fee varies depending on which paper you read and though it will doubtless be less than the £17m West Ham were willing to pay for the striker, it seems clear that if Bent does join then we will have broken the £11 million record transfer fee we paid for 'Lord of the Air' Sergei Rebrov.
The signing of Bent, for such an impressive fee, will represent another signal of intent for the coming season, with the board expecting nothing less than a Champions League place. The transfer also calls into question, yet again, the future of Jermain Defoe, who will doubtless be worried that he is set to slip even further down the pecking order at the club. With our North London rivals having sold their best striker this week, it is significant and perhaps symbolic that in the space of a few days we seem set to break our own transfer record to bring a striker in. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
