Negotiations over a potential two-month loan deal for the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder were continuing today, with the 35-year-old keen on a move to the north London club.
Despite there still being several obstacles to overcome, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was confident of a deal being struck on Friday and even suggested the former England skipper could come to watch his side in action against the npower League One side.
Redknapp's team were knocked out of the competition at the semi-final stage last year after a shock defeat against former club Portsmouth.
The Spurs boss, who won the trophy with Pompey in 2008, admits that, despite a packed fixture schedule, he is hoping his team can go all the way this year.
"We want to try to get to the final. It would be nice if we can," Redknapp said. "We're in every competition and we'll try to do our best in the every competition."
