Meanwhile, Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is preparing a package worth £50,000 a week to prevent Campbell from heading to Turkey. (Daily Mirror)
Matt Hughes in The Times thinks a less lucrative move to Fenerbahce is the more likely option because he doesn't have a good relationship with Redknapp's recently appointed assistant Tony Adams.
Campbell, who signed a new two-year deal worth £60,000 a week in January 2005, with an option for a further two years, quit the Gunners at the weekend. Since his arrival on a free transfer from Spurs in 2001 he won two Premiership titles, three FA Cups and scored in the Champions League final which Arsenal lost against Barcelona in May, consequently his last game for the club.
He also contributed significantly to England's World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004 campaigns and was a member of the World Cup 2006 squad. He represented his country as a Spurs player in the three major tournaments prior to his switch across north London, after making his international debut in May 1996.
Wenger tried to sell Campbell to Newcastle United a year ago. The defender also turned down the opportunity to talk with Fenerbahce before the World Cup. The report in The Times goes on to suggest Arsenal will seek to land Curtis Davies as his replacement. Tottenham are also very keen to sign the West Bromwich Albion and England Under 21 player.
