Antonio Conte has vowed to help Harry Kane win a trophy with Tottenham after the striker’s winning goal against Fulham on Monday night – his 266th for the club – drew him level with Spurs icon Jimmy Greaves at the top of their all-time scorers list.
Kane will break the record with his next Tottenham goal, while two more would take him to at least 20 in all competitions for the ninth season in a row.
But, despite the numbers that have delivered individual successes like three Premier League Golden Boot awards, there is something major missing in Kane’s career – trophies.
The as yet unfulfilled drive for silverware unpinned his desire to leave Tottenham in the summer of 2021 when Manchester City were prepared to make him the most expensive ever English player.
Even now, Bayern Munich still retain an interest in Kane, who is under contract until 2024. 90min understands that talks over a new deal are ongoing and that Spurs are confident their vice-captain will sign fresh terms. But he is frustrated by a disappointing run of form, which could prove a factor.
“We are talking about a player who has fantastic abilities, incredible skills,” Conte said.
“For sure I’d like to help him try to do something important. To win something with Tottenham. He loves Tottenham. Tottenham is in his heart. It would be good if together we are able to win something. It’s important to have this record. But it would be more important if you lift a trophy.”
Tottenham last won a trophy in 2008 when an extra-time winner from Jonathan Woodgate saw them prevail against Chelsea in the Carling Cup (now the Carabao Cup) final.
