Alessandro Bastoni discusses Tottenham interest

Italy defender Alessandro Bastoni has admitted that Tottenham tried to sign him last summer, but is happy that he chose to remain at Inter.

90min reported on Spurs' intense interest in the left-sided centre-back during the summer transfer window.

But Bastoni ended up staying at San Siro, and speaking to Corriere dello Sport, he briefly elaborated on his decision, though stressed he has respect for former boss Antonio Conte.

"There was some contact, but I’m happy I stayed at Inter," he said.

"With Conte, we entered the pitch knowing perfectly what we needed to do, because everything was studied in a maniacal manner."

Conte integrated Bastoni into Inter's first team during the 2019/20 season, with the young defender featuring 33 times in his first full term at San Siro.

Bastoni then played 41 times in all competitions as the Nerazzurri enjoyed Serie A success in 2020/21, wrestling the title back from Juventus and ending the Bianconeri's nine-year stranglehold on the Scudetto.

Later that summer, Bastoni was part of the Italy side that won Euro 2020, defeating England in the final on penalties.
