The club announced the signing of Kevin-Prince Boateng from Bel...Hertha Berlin this afternoon for a reported £5.4m. The 20 year old, half Ghanaian half German ,attacking midfielder had been in talks with the club for two weeks and it was feared that the deal had fallen through due to concerns surrounding a knee injury. Boateng, however, was at Spurs lodge today putting pen to paper on a deal that makes the German U-21 international the clubs seventh signing of the summer.
Kevin-Prince Boateng, or 'Ghetto Kid' as he calls himself in reference to his impoverished upbringing and distinctive tattoos, was widely regarded as one of the top young talents in Germany. The club beat off interest from UEFA Cup tormentors Sevilla and giants Real Madrid to secure the signature of a player who won Germany's prestigious Fritz Walter Gold Medal Award after being voted Best Young Player in Germany in July, 2006 and who also went on to contribute 14 assists towards Hertha's goal tally last season.
Martin Jol was understandably pleased to have captured such an exciting, and creative, talent: "Kevin is a talented player who plays for the Under-21 side of his country," said the manager. "You could compare him with the likes of Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone in that he is an exciting player for now and the future.
The player himself was quick to stress how happy he was to have joined Tottenham, adding: For me it is amazing to be in England," reacted Kevin to his arrival. "To be in London and playing for Spurs will be great for me. It has been my ambition to play in England, I am 20 now and am about to quickly realise my dream.
The addition of Boateng to the Spurs midfield may well signal the depature of Danny Murphy, with rumours linking the ex-Liverpool midfielder to a host of other clubs. Boateng, a strong, ball winning creative midfielder is already being touted for a place in the starting line up, which lacked such a player last season. One this is for sure, all Spurs fans will be excited to see this relatively unknown quantity in the lilywhite of their famous club. Bring on Sunderland!
