It is interesting to think Thursday against Inter we did play well in parts, but lost concentration and composure at the important moments. So when we lost 4-1 we thought it was the worst game of the season. You could not be more wrong.
The Fulham game was a disgraceful display by the team and I believe it was in fact our worst performance (should Fulham had of not been happy with a 1 goal lead it would have been a similar result to the Inter game).
You cannot pick an individual out as a culprit on Sunday, nor can you blame the team or the tactics when you think about it.
Many people had blamed the Inter game and that fatigue was in fact the problem. Once again could not have been more wrong.
The desire, confidence and drive was gone from the team as it was against Inter. It was there against Liverpool (just some silly mistakes and the opposition cheating caught us out).
Injuries are no excuse as the players on the pitch on Sunday were certainly more than capable compared to the Fulham team.
I even joked on Twitter that I was going to leave early to beat the traffic, but I am 100% committed to the team and will to the end!
When it comes down to it only the players can really answer to the bad team effort. They did not look tired, they just looked toothless and had a complete lack of imagination. It saddens me as this is not the players that I have seen all season (ok it is like the team at the very start of AVB's reign).
As outsiders it is difficult to put your finger on why players self destruct, more importantly why ours do and at the most important times of all!.
We have one game left this month and we go to Swansea in the hunt to rescue our form and season. It’s not the easiest of games, but compare it to the game we have in April and it is the key part of our entire season with games against Everton, Chelsea and Man City. 30th March til the 14th April we are ramming games in with mainly a 3 or 4 day gap.
If we can begin to find that form for the Swansea game then it will regain the confidence for the Basel game and that will be needed on the following game against Everton. Another win there will give us the momentum and confidence to see off Basel and next thing you know we've had a 4 win on the trot to face Chelsea away and a decent result there will certainly prepare us for City at home.
Its possible, its not really a pipe dream, but the players will need to do a lot of sole searching and digging deep to realise that 3 losses on the trot to teams that we should beat (Liverpool, Inter and Fulham) is not good enough. The break could not have come at a better time and its needed for the likes of Lennon and Dawson who are nursing injuries.
Lets forget this bad spell, push on get the morale back and quickly!
