However I am not surprised. Although Fergie will not truly leave Utd in full capacity you have to ask whether Fergie originally set himself till last year, but after losing the title to City he could not leave on a such a bad note.
Now the questions being asked is whether it is Jose or Moyes?
Rafa had pretty much confirmed that Jose will be at the bridge next season, but would Jose seriously turn his nose up at the Utd job? However it is likely that this was tied up before Fergie leaving even came out (in the footballing world). Moyes has always been linked to the job and his consistent high performance from a team with no transfer budget shows that Utd would be making a wise and sensible choice by installing him as manager.
My thoughts are that it is the right time for Fergie. He has won all that he can, he has brought through some special talents and imported some special talents what else is there to do? Fergie was aiming for Liverpool's target, but could not leave last year and after winning the title again from under City’s noses what a perfect time to leave.
Whether it is to be Moyes or Jose either are the right choice but from different sides of the same coin.
Here is what AVB had to say;
"I was immensely surprised to hear the news of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement today," said Andre.
"His contribution to the game has been second to none, his achievements outstanding and his impact on sport in general is a unique example of his class.
"He is the finest manager in world football and his legacy and achievements in the game are something that we can all cherish and admire for years to come.
"I really wish him all the best for the future."
One thing I will say is that you would expect a transitional period, so even more important that next season we must be fully equipped to take Utd and the league on (I want further wins at Old Trafford next season and so on).
