Now if you are to read the papers and online forums this summer is to be the end of Harry's tenure at White Hart Lane and he will be taking the vacant England manager’s role. Now personally, in terms of England, I do not think he is the right man for the job. I believe England need a young manager, with his own ideas of how the game should be played and one strong enough to drop the big names if they aren't performing. Now Harry does have these attributes, but due to his age I believe he will be a short term fix and after Brazil 2014 England will be this situation again. But we all know how international management works and I don’t think the FA will have the foresight to perhaps put a five year plan in place (Like Spain, Germany, Uruguay) and they will come knocking for him and whether we keep him or not. My heart says yes my head says no! So is there life after him?
Let’s assume that Harry goes - the most important thing is we have to keep this fantastic squad together and add to it. Luka and Bale will be subject to much speculation and Adebayor’s future is still unclear. Will he want to stay and play for a different manager? He has already made it clear that Redknapp was the driving force behind his decision to come. But if we are to continue performing at this level and excelling in the Champions League then Mr Levy has to make it number one priority it that we keep these players. In addition give Ledley a new contract, I know he has injury issues but he is still the best defender England have produced in 30 years and he would be England captain now had he not had this horrible injury. We need to keep him. Dawson and Kaboul are better players when they are next to him. In terms of adding to the squad Damiao would be a welcome addition up top - young and hungry is exactly what we want. Hazard can play anywhere across the middle which would add quality to an already strong midfield. I would like to see us pluck out a young up and coming left back as well to challenge Ekotto, there is no doubt of his improvement but he needs to be challenged.
Phase two of life after Harry is to get the right man for the job. Many are talking of Moyes who wouldn’t be a bad shout. I just wonder whether tactically he has what it takes. Jol? A true fans’ favourite but again maybe lacks that tactical know about how to compete with the very best. The right manager needs to continue with s playing the fast free-flowing football that we have been, perhaps Klinsmann? Germany’s 2006 World Cup team played some great football and surely he would love the opportunity to manage back at the club where he served so well? Jose? Can’t really see it myself and everyone knows he likes his teams to be defensively sound. Can we really ask Bale, Modric, Lennon and Rafa to sit and cover the back line and stifle their attacking flair? No sorry, not for us. I wonder whether we need look elsewhere and give it to Kevin Bond. Agreed he isn’t a big name but he would provide minimum disruption and has worked under Harry for so long. This is subject to Harry not taking him of course!
Whatever happens this summer Harry has built the club with the foundations of a side capable of challenging on all fronts. The key is to make sure there are not too many changes, some welcome additions both on and off the field and then there is no reason we can’t be challenging next year. In matters of heart vs head, the head is usually right. Let us all hope Harry rules with his head and stays with us and finishes the job he has started. If he goes with the heart then whatever happens we will support our beloved Spurs. There is life after Harry!
