Like with most Spurs fans this transfer has been a complete surprise. After adding Paulinho and Sandro coming back to fitness (also not to forget Parker) I am confused as to why it was necessary to buy him.
After the injuries in defense and the prolonged return of Kaboul, adding that we want to get rid of Ade and possibly Defoe, it is surely a lot of money to spend when he isn’t needed? As far as I am aware we are not in a position to do a Chelsea and Man City (buy so no one else can have the player), so it is difficult to understand the reasoning (but I certainly welcome the player).
So what does this deal signify transfer wise? Well that's simple if you ask me Parker is on his way out and you would also expect to see Huddlestone and Livermore at least go out on loan (so in this case the transfer makes absolute sense). AVB had said that Dempsey was sold to bring in some extra funds, so I would say that this transfer was likely unplanned. We are still in the market for other strikers and by the looks of it wingers and a left back. So in a nutshell there are still fringe players to leave and some big names to come in.
If we begin to look at how our squad is shaping up we are about to have a very strong midfield. With the likes of Sandro, Paulinho and Capoue (fighting it out for 2 likely), Chaldi, Lennon, Bale, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Holtby, Towsnend, Carroll, Falque and Ceballos we have pretty much each position covered at least two times over. For me this is a Title challenging midfield! The defense is being tightened and it is likely to see more acquisitions, but in an ideal world we could do with a good youngster to bring through in goal too. However upfront we now seem to have the shape of our title challenging front line with the acquisition of Soldado and Defoe. Again we still need to add another striker and the talk of Lopez has not gone away, also don’t be surprised to see some fresh blood come through.
One name that we should not expect to see signing is free agent Carlton Cole!
If we are signing the likes of Capoue to strengthen our depth then we are in for a big ride Spurs fans. So far the total spend is around £60million and we do not seem like stopping any time soon. We have already trimmed our wage bill by releasing the likes of Bentley and Gallas and we are to continue to get similar players out (earning and not playing).
So am I happy about the signing? Absolutely. A defensive midfielder that played 38 games, whilst scoring seven goals and three assists (last season) brings great depth and strength to the side.
COYS!!!
