Although the media state that we have broken our record twice so far and about to again with Willian and Lamela, but still it is all over shadowed by the "impending" Bale sale.
Whatever happens Bale has behaved as a true professional (or so it seems on the outside looking in), however his injury could easily be deemed suspect (which I can understand).
To the rumours though. AVB has said there is no deal in place for Bale and when quizzed that a deal is in place he commented;
"That is not true."
"Ideally we want to keep everyone to make us stronger - that is the ultimate objective of the club, in the end, anything can happen. We are dragging ourselves into the last weeks of transfer activity and it can become very, very frantic."
So let's take my "favourite" rumour started by the "highly" respectable Marca and then plagiarised by the bumbling idiots at the Daily Star. The Bale deal is done and Gareth is just waiting for it to be announced.
This rumour has sparked much confusion and anger amongst the fans. Firstly neither club is listed on a stock exchange so neither club have to report an agreed deal. Yes a deal could have been in place since January this year, but it could be activated at any time and no one would be any wiser. This applies to the below rumour too. Bale has not handed in a transfer request and if you wish to believe badly of a player because Madrid and Marca say he wants out and is forcing his way out, well shame on you!
The second is that Levy has sanctioned numerous high profile signings as a deal for Bale has been agreed.
Both rumours can be answered together in my opinion. Firstly if you are to sign an agreement or verbally agree a deal you would not spend that money without having it in place. It is simple accounting and something that Levy WOULD NOT rely on. Money has to be there in the first place to put a sale through. Do you really think that we have given post dated cheques to all the clubs we have dealt with this summer!? Don't be so foolish. The deals we have agreed to this date are based on what the club can afford, not on possible future earnings. We may as well bank next seasons Champions League money as well whilst we're at it then! Sorry I shouldn't resort to sarcasm. Most importantly though Madrid do not have the funds available! If you are to make a World Record bid you need to actually have the money there to spend and Madrid DO NOT. That is fact not fiction there!
Before the season had finished Levy & Co made Bale a promise. The club would show their ambition to keep him and spend big, build a team around him and qualify for the Champions League. That has been done so no broken promises there! Which brings me onto the third and final "rumour". Bale is not in fact leaving this summer and he wants to see what happens this year with the major signings the club has made and are making. A verbal agreement has been put in place over a future transfer for Bale (much like that of Ronaldo when he moved to Madrid).
The final one makes absolute sense (although rumour 2 may seem possible). Bale has seen the club commit major funds to satisfy his own ambition.
Think about it this way people. Under Harry Redknapp Levy & Co never really trusted him with the finances (not after what happened at Portsmouth), but also they couldn't see progression to be regular top 4 candidates under Harry. So why spend big? It makes sense that you would not go all in until you have a sure thing. So for the past 4 seasons we have spent money to bring the squad up to challenge, but nowhere near what we could have. So every year we have been building a pot of money. Then AVB comes in. Levy was 70% certain that AVB was the man to take us forward, but again he had to be certain. A finish in 5th, most ever Premier League points (for Tottenham) and a small miss on points from 3rd and 4th, Levy is now certain. The players are happy and we approach the edge of greatness (top 4), it’s now or never.
With Bale attracting interest from Europes elite it could not have been a better time. A cash injection has come along other the summer, some further players sold and suddenly we have the best kept warchest secret known to the sports world. Levy & Co have been called many things, but financial whizzes are what they really are. All this and a new stadium about to be built, numerous marquee signings I would like to hear people arguments as to how we are not a big club! Not many teams have spent what we have in one transfer window.
The club is set to move on to bigger things, if we want to fill the new stadium, attract the biggest sponsors and step up with the firm top teams this is the one off large investment that is needed. You do not have to regularly spend over £100million but likely £30million each season for a world-class addition and a couple of youngsters. This splurge is just what was needed and at the perfect time. We could not have done this under Redknapp, we could not have caved in and spent big in January (when there was an overall plan in place). I see it now and although I moaned like the rest of the fans at Levy, I can see his way of thinking and boy has it panned out.
So is the Bale transfer on or off? There is something there (that's for sure), but an imminent one? Bale wants to try and win a major medal/ trophy before leaving England (who knows when or if he'll come back) and with all of this happening it makes sense to give it at least one season. A sensible betting person would look at the investment made, watch the trend and make a decision after analysis. Meaning give it a season and go from there. If the team finishes top 3 it's big, big enough to stay another season… Likely yes. Title winners or near miss you would expect a contract extension to be in place and push on for one more season. Miss on a top 4 again it’s time to move on.
There are things that I do not wish to speak of to avoid being called the blood sucking ITK source so I would rather talk about each rumour and point to which one makes sense. Hopefully you guys and gals can see this for yourselves.
