Up until this season Lennon was the only option to place on the right wing and with his understanding and link up with Walker there was no question.
But this season things are very different and for me it’s a vast improvement. Azza has believed that he was always in the starting eleven and that he had no competition for the right hand side, but with the swift uprising of Townsend he couldn’t be more wrong. Last season I remember seeing Lennon plastered all over the news papers with late night’s out (for me a complete lack of respect and also confirming he feels he is guaranteed a starting spot). Then looking at Andros (who has bounced back from the betting “scandal”) and which one has the better character. Competition is key and with right sided players (very similar in style), it can only create a great battle for the team to benefit from.
In comparing the two I would not drop Andros to the bench and would continue to play him. Since the beginning of the season it is Andros that has shown the hunger and commitment. In many games when other players just hadn’t shown up he was trying to run the show! Look at the West Ham game! Andros was one of few players that was giving it his all (shame the rest of the team didn’t).
Whilst I welcome the competition, would you risk dropping Townsend with his form? I feel that Lennon has an uphill struggle to get ahead of Townsend and it is exactly what is needed to bring out more from the team.
Welcome back Azza, but you need to really show yourself now if you wish to jump ahead, scoring may be a good thing to try haha.
